Jean Spangler, who established herself among the stars at 26, appeared alongside the likes of Kirk Douglas and Betty Grable. On October 7, 1949, Spangler was preparing to meet her ex-husband. Two hours later, Spangler called home to say she would be out all night and the filming would take a full eight hours. And the next day she didn't go home. The first point of the police investigation is to find out where Spangler was filmed the night he disappeared. When it was soon discovered that she hadn't worked for any studios anywhere in Los Angeles that night, the foul alarms started going off.

A friend of Spangler's later said she was on her way to an abortion, which at the time was illegal and generally unsafe. Whether she died in the process or what happened on the way there, no one can be sure.
