Ambrose Bierce
Ambrose Bierce was one of the most successful short story writers of the late 1800s and early 1900s in America. His book about The Civil War veteran The Devil's Dictionary, was named as one of the "100 Greatest Masterpieces in American Literature." In 1914, the 71-year-old went to a Civil War battlefield, and then disappeared somewhere in the American Southwest. Many believe he was involved in the Mexican Revolution, while others claim he committed suicide near the Grand Canyon, but no evidence has been found.
